The National Museum of Modern Art (MMC) acts as a unique conduit between past and present in the capital of Lithuania and has earned a pivotal role as a cultural gateway to the city. With angular lines and white concrete cladding, it is both contemporary and classical—the first Libeskind box-form design—featuring a striking cut through the rectilinear structure to tie the dramatic entranceway to a rooftop outdoor theater and sculpture garden. The volume of the intersecting cut-away allows natural light to illuminate the galleries from the north through floor-to-ceiling windows, while the south-facing glazing gives shelter under a 16-foot cantilever, giving visitors an outdoor space shielded from the winter.
The project was realized in collaboration with Lev Libeskind, Daniel Libeskind, and their respective studios.
